Hey everyone! I hope you all enjoyed your day off last week if you got one. We definitely had an exciting week full of exciting things going on. Of of the many exciting things that happened were that we went to the Schiele Museum.
These are the updates and news in our classroom...
In Reading, we are finishing our book entitled, The Tiger Rising. Students have thoroughly enjoyed this book and the discussions we have had as have I. We have been talking about inferences, Character Traits, Setting, Plot, and now at the very end are talking about the Theme of the book. Students have done a great job of identifying these skills in their independent reading book. As the year progresses, we will still be talking about these skills as readers. I do a lot of spiral review throughout the year. Just to assure you, we have not stopped talking about these things in class. Right now, we will continue talking about Theme. This week we are starting to talk about Nonfiction text and reading closely in these types of books. We will start by reading a lot of exciting and engaging texts that talk about issues students will be interested in. We will then go into more nonfiction text talking about main idea and inferences in nonfiction text as well. Also, we will be starting a new round of spelling starting tomorrow. Please make sure that you look out for these Spelling Folders coming home with their new words tomorrow afternoon as they will have homework.
In Writing, we have finished our Realistic Fiction Unit. We are now starting a new unit on Opinion/Persuasive Writing. We are now taking time to get used to writing "Essays" using a Thesis Statement. Start a conversation with your child about what Thesis statement we used in class to write our starter essay. For our Reading Response this week, students are able to write and submit an Article to the FM Times entitled, "What Thanksgiving means to me." This entry will be for Extra Credit as well as a substitute for your child's reading response this week. I have attached the explanation letter at the bottom of this post as well if you have any further questions. (Your child should have this paper in their OWL Binder as well.) This is due this Friday!
You should have also received an assignment called, "Turkey Writing." This is an assignment that is due November 17th(next Monday). Students are to decorate their Turkey and write a paper about their Turkey. The assignment is in your Child's OWL Binder as well.
In Math, we are starting our Unit on Division. We have started talking about our Divisibility Rules. These Divisibility Rules are in your child's Math Interactive Notebook. These rules need to be used for tonight's homework and will be used throughout the unit as well. Please continue to make sure your child is taking their math interactive notebook home so that you are aware of what is going on in class. This Friday, students will have a timed test. Please make sure your child is continuing to study their multiplication facts every week!
In Social Studies, we are starting to talk about the Colonies. We will talk about the different Colonies that were established, who established them, and the successes of each. We have not taken any notes yet, but students have a USA weekly that we talked about in class today. This USA weekly gives you great information on the English colonies we are talking about at the very beginning of this unit. Tomorrow, we will take time out to honor Veteran's Day. Students will get to tell you all about what they learned about Veteran's day after school tomorrow!!
Important Dates coming up:
11/13-USA Weekly Quiz(Week 8)
11/14-Timed Test in Math & Week 12 Assessment
11/15-FM Times Entry submitted(Emailed to me as well for Credit)
11/17-Thanksgiving Turkey Writing Due
Please let me know if you have any questions!
