Hey Everyone! I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving and are enjoying having family in town! I wanted to give you an update on what is going on in our classroom.
In ELA, we are in nonfiction text features. We are working on how to identify the features and tell their purpose in the text in which they are looking. We will looking at this for most of next week. I have also assigned student's a book report. This book report was sent home with your child last week in which they have to look at the character, setting, and plot in their independent reading book they have chosen. They then have to write a summary that describes the items they have chosen to represent each of the parts of their book. I will attach the book report guidelines on Monday of next week. I conferred with each student and they have chosen a book. Each student should have taken this book home over Thanksgiving Break. This book report is due December 16th. This will be in place of ALL reading responses that lead up Christmas Break!! In writing, we are starting our unit on Opinion/Persuasive Writing. This unit started off with students learning about how to write an essay. They have done a great job so far! We should be done with this piece of writing by the end of the nine weeks!
In Social Studies, we are learning about the Colonies. Students learned about how the explorers found the land in the Americas and now we are learning how they settled in the land of the 13 colonies! Students will be actively engaged in learning about the 13 colonies when we get back through an in-class project.
In Math, we are starting to learn about the traditional algorithm to divide numbers. We will start with 1 digit by 2 digit and work our way to bigger numbers. We will be spending all week on this! We will start having a timed quiz on Friday of next week. Please make sure that they are studying their multiplication tables every night! This is so important for them to know as we divide numbers and learn new strategies that involve multiplication.
Important Dates coming up:
12/5: Weekly Assessment in Math and Timed Multiplication Quiz to the 9's
12/12: Spelling Test on all words (Words given December 1)
12/16: Book Reports are due/Presentations this day
12/17: Last day before Christmas Break
I hope you all enjoy the rest of your Thanksgiving Holiday with your family!
Ms. Tomlinson
