Hey all!
We have had so much going on in our classroom the past week. It seems like time is flying by as I always say. I wanted to give you a few updates on what is going on in our class as well as a few important dates coming up.
In Reading, we are still continuing to find just right books. We have started our Character Unit in The Tiger Rising and learning about Character Traits. Today, we listed character traits of the two main characters in The Tiger Rising. We also saw how one of the new characters on the block changed from one part of the story to the next. We as readers REVISED our thinking of who the character was based on new information in the text. Talk with your child about the Characters in our class read aloud. Also, ask them a challenging question... What is an inference? We touched on this today and will continue to go more in depth as we continue reading.
In writing, our realistic fiction stories are coming along. I am so excited on the final product of these stories. We have developed our characters, created a problem/struggle the character faces, and are starting to think of how that problem will get resolved in the ending of our stories. We are almost there!! I can't wait for you to read them!
In Social Studies, we are starting to venture into the world of EXPLORERS. We will start talking about the motivations of the explorers. Why did the explorers come to the new world? Also, we will start talking about each individual explorers route to the new world and what they discovered! Make sure to look in your child's Social Studies interactive notebook to find notes they should be studying every night! I have also posted the Explorers Unit Vocabulary on the Social Studies section of my blog for your reference. Students will get a copy of this as well!
In math, we are starting our Multiplication Unit. We are starting to multiply 2 digit by 1 digit numbers using the area model and will finish the week multiplying 4 digit by 1 digit numbers!! Whew! Make sure to check out my math blog to see what the Area Model looks like and how you can help your child. We will have a multiplication timed quiz this coming Friday. I have given students a Multiplication Facts sheet that is located in the front of their Math Interactive Notebook. Please reference this, if needed, as they are studying.
Important Dates and Reminders:
Let me know if you have any questions!
Have a great week,
Ms. Tomlinson
