Hey everyone! I hope you all enjoyed your Christmas with your families. I know we had a lot of fun traveling to the beach and celebrating Christmas with our family as well! I wanted to update you on what is going on in our classroom this week and different dates that are important in the next two weeks.
In Math, we are starting to practice multiplicative comparisons with the phrases such as times as many and times as much. We will be doing word problems with these phrases at the beginning of the week and work our way into Factors and Multiples. I have added a new video on our Mathematicians blog on factors that we will going over in class this week and a video on bar models we are learning at the beginning of this week. Check these two videos out this week at any point if you get time! We will be having an assessment coming next Thursday on the material we cover over the next two weeks. Please make sure they are studying every night via their homework.
In Writing, we are continuing to write our thesis statements and provide reasons that support our thesis statements. Students should have brought this home with them tonight to work on this. They should be coming up with three reasons that support their thesis statement. We will continue this throughout the week!
In Reading, we are building our comprehension skills through asking good questions as we read. As we do this we will use specific strategies which include inferring to get our answers. Inference will be a big theme in our lessons into the coming weeks as we will focus on inference by: inferring text clues, meanings of unfamiliar words, helping us crack open text features, and wrapping our minds around big ideas in nonfiction text which is the THEME. This will be our focus over the next few weeks. We are also not doing any Reading Responses this month as we are doing our next BOOK REPORT on a historical fiction novel. Students need to have a book chosen by the end of this week. I have sent home this information for the book report that will be due on February 6th. We have spelling again these next two weeks and students got their spelling words as of today.
In Social Studies, we are reviewing the colonies(Chapter 5) for our test next Tuesday. Students brought home a study guide today and need to finish this. This is a review of information learned before the break and through their projects they worked on. Students will have all week to study as we are moving on to new information talking about Slavery and Indentured Servants in the colonies, the Triangular Trade, and the beginning of the Revolutionary War. This information will gear us up for our next unit will be on the Revolutionary War.
Remember that students need to be studying their math interactive notebook daily and their multiplication facts. This will ensure that they are successful. It will be a full two weeks!
Important Dates:
1/13: Social Studies Chapter 5 Test
1/15: Spelling Test
1/15: Math Assessment
2/6: Historical Fiction Book Report Due
As always, let me know if you have any questions!
